Last Alchemist

You loosen your grip on the dagger, though you keep it hidden beneath your cloak. “You’re clearly in over your head,” you say, your tone measured. “But I’m willing to help—if you tell me why you’re here and what you intend to do with that book. We might have a common goal, or at least a common enemy.”You advance another step, your tone steady but carrying a hint of challenge. “You seem to value that book deeply,” you remark, narrowing your eyes. “But tell me—do you truly understand its significance? Explain yourself, and I may allow you to keep it.” The man hesitates, his knuckles whitening as his gaze flickers toward the exit. You carefully survey the chamber, your eyes lingering on the runes glowing faintly on the walls and the sturdy stone pillars scattered throughout. Silently, you maneuver to block the man’s path to the sole exit, your fingers discreetly pressing a concealed switch on the wall that triggers a nearly imperceptible barrier, buying you the advantage. You take a measured step backward, the sound of your boots grinding on the stone reverberating through the chamber. Fixing the man with a cold stare, you declare, “You should’ve thought twice before stepping into this place.” Turning sharply, you vanish into the shadows, silently drawing your dagger and positioning yourself to strike when he inevitably follows.
