Last Alchemist

You push deeper into the catacombs, scanning for a secure location to regroup. Spotting a recessed niche in the wall, you hastily gather rubble to construct a crude barricade, crouching behind it as the chill seeps into your bones and you strain to catch any sign of approaching footsteps. In the shadowy stillness of the catacombs, you steady yourself against the damp stone wall, your fingers brushing over its uneven surface. “I can hear you,” you say with quiet authority, your tone firm but controlled to avoid carrying too far. “Step out and tell me why you’re here.” A faint rustle from the darkness confirms you’re not alone. You drag your boots noisily along the rough stone floor, letting the sharp noise reverberate through the tunnel. Speaking with a gruff tone, you announce, “This way looks blocked—I’ll try a different route,” before sliding silently into a concealed niche, your breath shallow as you listen for the hesitant approach of your follower.Venturing further into the catacombs, you suddenly feel the weight of another presence pressing against the silence. Pausing, you call out firmly, “I know you’re there. If you’re a friend, show yourself, and we can talk. If you’re not, I’d think carefully before testing my patience.” A low, deliberate exhale echoes from the darkness, hinting at a decision yet to be made.
